Abstract
The reader of a text actively constructs a mental picture of the objects and events mentioned in it. The construction process uses prior knowledge and generalization about similar objects and events. In reading through “The Programmer” (below), the recipient may picture an office environment, computing machines, men in white dress shirts, and so on.
