Abstract

The hydrogen atom in auniform magnetic field is a remarkably rich example of a simple but real physical system displaying all the features which are currently causing excitement in the classical and quantum mechanical study of non-integrable systems. The analysis of short range and long range correlations in quantum spectra has led to a deeper understanding of the quanta1 manifestation of classical chaos, and the appreciation of the role of isolated unstable periodic classical orbits has led to a breakthrough in our understanding of the quasi-Landau phenomenon.
