Abstract
The present paper constitutes an interim report on experiments being conducted at Imperial College and at the Physikalisches Institut of the University of Bonn. These experiments involve high magnetic fields but, in contrast with most experimental investigations which have been concerned with structure, aim to reveal modifications in atomic f-values due to an externally applied magnetic field. It is perhaps fitting to recall here that, when our project was initiated, only one contemporaneous study of the change of oscillator strength as a function of applied field strength was known to us, namely the theoretical work of Professor M.R.C. McDowell and his collaborators.1
