Abstract

This paper introduces the investigations of underwater adhesives since 1970 in the P.R.C. We discuss the adhesives studied by Guangzhou Institute of Chemistry, the Hydraulic Research Institute in Beijing, and Changsha Institute of Chemical Industry, etc. At present there are four different kinds of polymeric materials used as underwater adhesives; namely, epoxy resin, polyurethane, ethylenic-terminated polyurethane and epoxy-acrylate adhesives. The adhesives which give good bond strength and aging resistance in water have been successfully used in repairing sunken ships, treating concrete structures in water and bonding plastizized PVC sheet on wet concrete floors.
