Abstract
Ethylene mercaptoester (EME) polymeric coupling agents containing 23–90 wt% mercaptoester units have been synthesized starting from ethylene-vinyl acetate (EVA) random copolymers. The EME copolymers are semicrystalline, exhibit good thermal stability and have been shown to have the ability to interact chemically with both epoxy resins and iron ions through the mercaptoester functional group. Both the initial adhesion strength (EME 90) and the corrosion protection (EME 23) were increased substantially beyond those of the controls when the EME copolymers were applied as coupling agents in steel/epoxy adhesion systems. The wet adhesion durability results were analyzed in terms of the potential number of interfacial bonds formed, hydrophobicity and surface energy of the interfacial region.
