Abstract
Many organisations have used data dictionaries on mainframe computers for a number of years to support DBMS’s such as IMS and IDMS, and the application systems using them. However, far fewer have used such tools for a long period to support the analysis phase of Information Systems development. In describing the experiences of a major international bank, (which will be referred to as X-Bank) I wish to illustrate some of the issues that may be faced when selecting an analysis methodology and when preparing standards for the data dictionary.
