Abstract
By a popular tradition, a baby delivered when still wrapped in the amniotic sac is destined for great luck throughout his or her life: people say that he or she was born with a caul. Besides its putative magic properties, a true scientific interest in the “protective” activity of the amniotic membrane dates back to the first half of the Century, when a certain number of experiments were carried out, in Germany and Eastern Europe, to investigate its possible clinical applications. Satisfactory results were achieved by using sheets of sterile, dried human amnion as a peritoneal graft in gangrene or as a biological dressing for the treatment of extensive wounds and burns, always recording a definite improvement of wound healing and decrease of pain1.
