Abstract
Among autotrophs three different mechanisms for autotrophic CO2 fixation are known. of these the reductive pentose phosphate cycle (Calvin cycle) is the best studied. It is found in all phototrophic eukaryotes and in a number of autotrophic prokaryotes. This cycle has been considered universal among autotrophs (Quayle and Ferenci, 1976), but during recent years several autotrophs have been shown to Lack the key enzymes of the reductive pentose phosphate cycle and thus use other mechanisms for CO2 fixation.
