Filtration of Irons and Steels

  • Chapter
Foundry Processes

Abstract

Filtering liquid metal to remove undesirable suspended phases has been utilized most extensively in direct chill casting of aluminum. In the last few years demand for increased quality of cast products, as well as the availability of filters for higher temperature applications, have led to the use of filters in casting of superalloys, irons, copper-base alloys, stainless steels, and, most recently, carbon and low alloy steels. Because of these trends several graduate students and the writer have worked at Case Western Reserve University on several aspects of iron and steel filtration for several years. These include filtration effectiveness, the sizing of filters, and, to some extent, the effect of filtration on the structure of the filtered metal.
