Physico-Chemical Aspects of the Ladle Desulphurization of Iron and Steel

  • Chapter
Foundry Processes

Abstract

Some physico-chemical aspects of the reactions occuring in iron (hot-metal) and steel external desulphurization processes are discussed. In steelmaking, these processes consist of batch treatments performed in torpedo cars (iron) or open ladles (steel and in some cases iron).

For hot-metal desulphurization, very potent reagents are available (magnesium-based mixtures, calcium carbide and lime-based mixtures, sodium carbonate). As the efficiency of the treatment usually hinges on kinetic limitations, the development of injection techniques has been an important asset.

For killed-steels, desulphurization is the result of a reaction between metal and top slag. Requirements in terms of slag control and stirring needs are analyzed.
