Abstract
The objective of semen or washed sperm assessment is to determine the probability of reproductive success, i.e., the fertility potential of the sample. Diagnostic procedures available for evaluating human sperm fertility potential are limited in number and effectiveness. Semen analysis is the most frequently employed procedure which Includes measurements of semen volume, pH and viscosity, assessments of sperm density, percentage of motile cells, the quality of motility, and sperm morphology. A detailed discussion of the semen analysis is included in Chapter 6. Unfortunately, parameters of the semen analysis taken either individually or collectively are poor predictors of fertility status except in the extreme cases of azoospermia or asthenospermia, i.e., the patient without sperm or with only nonmotile sperm.
