Gamete Intrafallopian Transfer (GIFT)

  • Chapter
In Vitro Fertilization and Embryo Transfer

Abstract

With the unifying goal of pregnancy, several protocols have been developed for the treatment of the infertile couple. Steptoe and Edwards (1978) first reported a live birth following human in vitro fertilization and embryo transfer (IVF-ET). Since that initial report, IVF-ET has undergone exponential growth as a treatment modality for certain types of infertility. Several other techniques have been utilized that manipulate gametes or fertilized ova in vitro for the treatment of infertility. Such techniques include intrauterine insemination (Kerin et a1., 1984; Sher et a1., 1984; Toff1e et a1., 1985; Byrd et a1., 1986; Confino et a1., 1986; Hoing et a1., 1986) and the transfer of fertilized embryos (Buster et a1., 1983) or sperm and oocytes directly into the uterine cavity (Craft et a1., 1982).
