Abstract

The volumes of data and reports generated through the normal operation of in vitro fertilization and embryo transfer (IVF-ET) programs has necessitated the development of computer-assisted modes of information storage and retrieval. Collection, storage, retrieval and statistical analyses of data are essential for the successful operation of both the clinical and laboratory aspects of IVF-ET programs, regardless of whether such programs are designed solely as a clinical service or operate in conjunction with basic or clinical research efforts. It has probably become apparent to any person involved in IVF-ET that the variables contributing ultimately to success or failure are incalculable, and that a day-to-day (or week-to-week) assessment of pertinent laboratory and clinical parameters is an important part of an overall quality control system in an IVF-ET program. In addition, proper record keeping obviates the need for long and drawn out data reduction required for prospective and retrospective studies. The large number of records generated during a patient’s treatment cycle makes computer-assisted record and data management a time-saving, cost-effective aid, and the current availability and low cost of microcomputers makes such an approach feasible for virtually any size IVF program.
