Obesity

  • Chapter

Abstract

The problem of overweight in the adult population is one of longstanding and serious professional concern and has become a national obsession. In contrast, the problem of obesity in children has, until recently, received relatively little attention. Difficulty in treating adults and the persistence of the problem, recognition of family patterns of obesity, alarm over an increasing percentage of overweight and a decreasing percentage of physically fit youngsters, and greater attention to problems of children in general have contributed to increased awareness of childhood obesity as a problem.
