Abstract

Pediatric psychology has been defined as that field of research and practice concerned with “a wide variety of topics in the relationship between the psychological and physical well-being of children, including behavioral and emotional concomitants of disease and illness, the role of psychology in pediatric medicine, and the promotion of health and prevention of illness among healthy children” (Roberts, Maddux, & Wright, 1984, pp. 56–57). The need for such a merging of pediatrics and psychology was aptly demonstrated years ago in a survey of patient patterns in pediatric practice. Here, it was found that only 12% of patients presenting to pediatricians had problems exclusively of a physical nature. The remaining problems were either largely psychological (36%) or such that physical and psychological factors were both of importance (52%) (Duff, Rowe, & Anderson, 1973).
