Abstract

I believe in string theory1 because it is the only framework we have which seems able to reconcile gravity with quantum mechanics. String theory also seems rich enough to incorporate all the known elementary particles and their interactions. However, the manner in which these are incorporated is as yet highly ambiguous. The road from some two-dimensional conformai field theory formulated on the world sheet at the Planck scale to four-dimensional physics in real space-time at energies ≲ 1 TeV is very long and tortuous, with many forks where one does not know which turning to take. It may be that this ambiguity will be resolved purely theoretically by an understanding of the mechanism whereby string dynamics selects a ground state. Even in this case, one must learn how to do phenomenology with this understanding. Alternatively, it is possible that purely phenomenological arguments and model-building will help us towards the correct string vacuum, much as studies of pseudoscalar meson dynamics helped us understand the QCD vacuum.
