Abstract
Initiation is a necessary event without which nothing happens and beyond which everything is possible. Indeed, after a sufficient initiating treatment, the carcinogenic process can either evolve naturally or operationally be modulated. The factors that modulate an initiated carcinogenesis can have positive or negative effects. When the incidence and/ or the yield of cancer is increased and/or the latency period is decreased by the modulating treatment, the modulation is considered as positive whereas a treatment which decreases the incidence and/or the yield of cancer and/or increases the latency period is considered as a negative modulator.
