Abstract

The topic of nonlinear optical effects is currently at the forefront of research because of its potential application to optical signal processing and optical computing,1 Organic systems can be expected to play a significant role because of their relatively large nonresonant optical nonlinearity and subpicosecond response time.2,3 This paper presents a review of recent work conducted in the author’s laboratory and also reports some new previously unpublished results. Our research program on organic nonlinear optics is a comprehensive one which covers the following aspects: (i) Microscopic understanding of optical nonlinearities, (ii) Syntheses of novel nonlinear organic polymers, (iii) Design and molecular engineering of polymeric thin films, (iv) Ultrastructure determination for these films, and (v) Study of nonlinear optical effects.
