Abstract

The chemiosmotic hypothesis states that the electron transfer chain of mitochondria is coupled to ATP synthesis via a difference of proton’s electrochemical potential (Δũ H ) across the energy transducing membrane [1, 2]. The proton circuit appears to be analogous to an electrical circuit, where the respiratory chain is the battery which causes generation of the transmembrane potential gradient used to carry out tasks: i.e. ATP synthesis.
