Abstract
The preservation of our cultural heritage is a multidisciplinary endeavor involving the specialties of biologist, stone conservator, chemist, and architect. Conservation of outdoor monuments or statues requires a greater input from biologists in the form of biological control, than does conservation of similar objects kept in a controlled museum environment. In view of the potential enhanced effects of the physical environment and biological factors it is important to ensure that any material to be applied to the surface of objects for consolidation or cleaning not encourage the growth of existing microorganisms.
