Abstract
Mixed valence of cerium in CePd3 has been investigated by variety of techniques. The bulk susceptibility measurement reveals a broad maximum around 150 K /1/; the X(T) is highly reduced compared to that of trivalent Ce at lower temperatures. The L111 edge X-ray absorption spectra assigned the valence for Ce as 3.2 in this compound /2/. Diffuse neutron scattering showed nearly temperature independent large linewidth which was interpreted as spontaneous relaxation of local 4f magnetization due to interconfiguration fluctuation between 4f1 and 4f°/3/. The linewidth of the 4f1 level was calculated to be around 220 K with the excitation energy around 40 meV which is far too small compared to that obtained from Raman spectra (Ex ≅ 300 meV) /4/.
