Abstract

Despite the fact that the legal age for the purchase and consumption of alcoholic beverages is 18 years and older in the U.S., it is not uncommon to find that the vast majority of teenagers have experienced the effects of alcohol. Further, a significant proportion of the young have established a stable pattern of consumption prior to attaining the legal age. This discrepancy stems, in part, from observations that the use of alcohol by youth is symbolically associated with adult status and that there is no homogeneous view with respect to adult disapproval of teenage drinking. On special occasions that include the use of alcohol, parents may allow children to drink. They sanction its use under special conditions. Occasional drinking (i.e., consumption of alcohol) until drunk and restless behavior while intoxicated have been fairly conventional youthful activities associated with growing up in America.
