Receptor-Mediated Transcytosis of Plasma Molecules by Vascular Endothelium

  • Chapter

Abstract

Vascular endothelium is endowed with a wide spectrum of functions among which of paramount importance is the exchange of substances between blood and tissues. Endothelium possesses all the basic properties of an epithelium highly specialized for transport: it is polarized, metabolically very active, and exhibits a structure and biochemistry subtly differentiated according to the activities of the tissue in which it resides.8, 107 As demonstrated by work carried out especially in the last decade, the participation of endothelial cells in the plasma-interstitial fluid exchanges is a more refined and dynamic phenomenon than initially considered.
