Abstract
Biological membranes have complex lipid compositions, with phospholipids and cholesterol as their main components. More than 100 different lipids have been found in biological membranes. The reasons for the presence of such a large variety are not well understood, and only in a few cases have specific functions been attributed to membrane lipids.
