Abstract
Ideally computer-based instruction should combine the flexibility of a gifted personal tutor with the consistency of a machine. The gifted teacher brings qualities of perceptiveness and responsiveness to the tutorial interaction which make it possible for instruction to be tailored to the personal and changing needs of the learner. This is a major aim of Intelligent Teaching Systems (Sleeman & Brown, 1982), which are being developed at the Admiralty Research Establishment, Applied Psychology Unit (APU). This paper reports research on the application of the theory and methodology of Self-Organised Learning (Thomas & Harri-Augstein, 1985) to the development of an Intelligent Teaching System. The domain, submarine command tactics, is simulated in a war game HUNKS, an abbreviation of HUNter Killer Simulation.
