Abstract

Booher (1978) summarized several studies which demonstrated that when maintenance technicians, with only a minimum of training and experience, use a Job Performance Aid (JPA) their performance meets or exceeds that of technicians with much higher levels of training and experience. Further, when highly skilled technicians use JPAs they make fewer mistakes (Foley, 1973). However, when these research results were applied to technical manuals, the expected improvements were not forthcoming.

This chapter draws heavily on material from a paper by Hartung and O’Neil (1985). Additional comments and discussion are solely the responsibility of the author.
