Abstract
Nd-doped LiNbO3is a very promising laser material because of the combination of the laser properties of the Nd3+ion and the electro-optical and nonlinear optical properties of lithium niobate. However, the potential of this material has not been fully realized because of photorefractive damage. Recently, it has been discovered that the MgO doping reduces this damage. T. Y. Fan reported laser results in LiNbO3:Nd,MgO. Thresholds as low as 3.6 mv and slope efficiencies of 39% in a resonantly pumped device have been achieved. The electro-optical and nonlinear optical properties have been used to make self-Q-switched and self-frequencydoubled lasers. Other interesting devices may be constructed. The photorefractive damage, while still present, is greatly suppressed compared to that in non-MgO doped material.
