Abstract

We have investigated the luminescence of Li(Gd,Y)F4:Ce(l%),Tb(l%) at different temperatures. Upon diluting the Gd3+ sublattice with we observed in the emission spectrum of the 15% Gd3+ compound, going from liquid helium temperature to room temperature, a sharp increase of the intensity of the Ce emission with respect to the intensity of the Gd emission at 200K. This is caused by back transfer from Gd3+ to Ce3+. The origin of this back transfers is the band broadening of the Ce3+ absorption band at 290 nm; it starts to overlap the Gd3+ emission line (λ = 311 nm) at about 200K. We also have estimated the transfer and radiative probabilities in this system.
