Abstract
I review the basic theoretical ideas and techniques used in the description of hot nuclei. I then discuss, in some detail, the shape transitions and the upper temperature limits of nuclear stability.
Lectures delivered at the International School of Heavy Ion Physics, 2nd Course: The Response of Nuclei under Extreme Conditions, Erice, 12-22 October 1986.
