Abstract

The phenomenon of injection locking of a laser by insertion of an injected signal at the laser frequency appears to have been first observed in 1966.1 It has since been investigated in different kinds of lasers,2–9 and has proved to be of interest in studies of instabilities and chaos. Only in recent years have attempts been made to study its statistical features.11,12 Here one finds that the nature of the mode competition and the resulting laser phase transition can be drastically modified by the presence of an injected signal. The effect is particularly striking if we examine the probability distributions of the laser intensity and of the phase of the laser field.
