Abstract

The emission spectrum of two-level atoms driven by a strong monochromatic excitation field has been the subject of considerable theoretical and experimental study over the years. Its ultimate understanding constitutes an important achievement of quantum optics. This spectrum, initially predicted by Mollow1 and subsequently observed by various groups2, possesses a characteristic symmetric triplet structure that can be inferred with the dressed- atom model3A generalization of this problem, i.e. understanding the atomic spectra emitted under conditions of bichromatic excitation, is an intriguing and relatively unexplored subject. Bichromatic excitation of atoms has also been related to studies of laser instabilities, modulation spectroscopy, and optical bistabilities.4
