Emission Frequency of a Homogeneously Broadened Laser Operating Below Threshold

Abstract

By considering the effect of small perturbations around the zero-intensity solution we demonstrate that there is a “preferred” optical frequency for the single-mode laser below the lasing threshold. This frequency is generally different from the frequency of the usual non-trivial lasing solutions though they are equivalent at the lasing threshold. This suggests using the “preferred” frequency to define a sub-threshold, zero-amplitude branch of solutions which bifurcates to form the finite amplitude branch at threshold.
