Oil-Water Interfaces: Surface Tension, Rigidity And Structure

  • Chapter
Surfactants in Solution

Abstract

Ellipsometry and surface light scattering allow the measurement of the rigidity constant and the structure of ultralow surface tension interfaces. We have measured the rigidity constant K of two surfactant monolayers at an oil/water interface. The first one is a monolayer with a very low K value and leads to the formation of bicontinuous phases, and we find K < kBT as expected. The second one is more rigid and gives rise only to the formation of birefringent phases, and we find K > kBT. Some information on the structure of the microemulsion oil or water interfaces is also obtained.
