Photoprocesses in Surfactant Solutions of Thionine

  • Chapter

Abstract

Photoprocesses involving thionine have been investigated in representative anionic, neutral and cationic micellar media. From a detailed study of the absorption and fluorescence spectra the properties of the microenvironment around this molecule in the micellar media have been inferred. The site of its solubilization in the micelles and the extent of water penetration into these sites are discussed in the light of these data. Photoredox reactions of this compound have been investigated in the micellar environment employing the technique of flash photolysis. The type and extent of interaction of the product transient species with each other and with the micellar environment are discussed in the light of spectral and decay kinetics data. The unique effect of anionic micellar media on the decay kinetics of cationic species and the effect of electrolytes have been presented. The applicability of the pseudophase model and its influence on the different reaction pathways have been considered.
