Abstract
Th session on Neurotransmitters and Peptides in the superficial dorsal horn was introduced by P.M Headley who emphasised the problems inherent in many of the experimental approaches used and the lack of correlation between results obtained with different techniques. He pointed out that many peptidergic neurons could a;so be releasing fast acting transmitters such as glutamate and that this may explain the presence of the large dense core vesicles mixed with a small clear vesicle population within primary afferent endings. Reference to the peripheral role of substance P and calcitonin gene related polypeptide (CGRP) in the response to injury and maintaining the periphery was often made during the session.
