Abstract
The tooth pulp and the cornea are peculiar in that their major sensibility is pain. It is thus assumed that the primary afferent neurones innervating these trigeminal receptive fields are mostly nociceptors. In the present study, the primary afferent neurones innervating the tooth pulp of three mandibular molars (MTP) and the cornea (COR) were labelled by retrograde transport of horseradish peroxidase (HRP) in young (b.w.=200g) male rats of the Sprague-Dawley strain. Labelled cell bodies were studied with reference to their size and Nissl pattern. The numerical data from the cell size analysis were compared with those obtained from a similar analysis on the primary afferent neurones comprising a trigeminal cutaneous nerve, the cutaneous branch of the mylohyoid nerve (MhN).
