Abstract
One of the most provocative aspects of the aging process is that people do not all age in the same way. The timing and nature of vulnerability to pathogens and the course of disease varies widely among individuals. While physiologically-oriented workers may look for the mechanism of aging in cells, hormones, and brain sites to identify the common, underlying processes (Hayflick, 1977), the manifest variation in the way people age—their differential development—is a striking phenomenon that requires study in itself. In fact, one could argue that a science of aging must, of necessity, deal with both general mechanisms and moderating influences.
