Biocompatibility of Co-Cr-Ni Alloys

Part of the book series: NATO ASI Series ((NSSA,volume 171))

Abstract

Cobalt, chromium and nickel containing alloys are frequently used for orthopaedic implants and prostheses in spite of the increasing number of reports dealing with reactions of intolerance to these metals. Any implant introduced into the human organism undergoes at least two strokes: physico-mechanical owing to the environment of the site of implantation, and electrochemical due to the presence of chloride ions in the biological milieu. There exist an interaction between the implant and the tissue leading to a tissue response expecially in the vicinity of the implanted material.
