Abstract

The first lecture has outlined the basic physical processes that give rise to photoelectron, Auger and X-ray emission spectra. It has also shown how chemical factors, valency, atomic environment etc. can modify both the energies and intensities of the photons and the electrons detected in PAX spectroscopy. In this lecture attention will be focussed on transitions that directly involve the valence electrons and where, understandably, greater ‘chemical effects’ are observed.
