Trace Element Deficiencies and Immune Responsiveness

  • Chapter
Trace Elements in Man and Animals 6

Abstract

In recent years, great interest has been generated regarding the influence of nutrition upon host immunocompetence (Katz and Steihm, 1977; Suskind, 1977). While the main focus has been on protein and energy nutriture and their role in immune responsiveness (Malave, et al, 1980), trace metals, many of which are critical for mammalian survival and reproduction, have begun to be investigated in this connection (Cunningham-Rundles, 1982). Because of the consumption of highly refined and heavily processed food items, in which the trace element content may be reduced significantly (Zwickl, et al, 1980) there is now concern that marginal deficiency of trace elements may represent a public health problem in developed nations (Klevay, et al, 1980), including marginal trace element status in countries such as the United States (Hambidge, et al, 1976). In this paper we will focus on the effects of deficiencies of zinc, copper and manganese on the immune system.
