The Current Status of Laser Angioplasty

  • Chapter
Light in Biology and Medicine

Abstract

Laser angioplasty is the reopening of a blocked or narrowed vessel by the intraluminal application of laser energy.

Narrowing or blockage of arteries by atherosclerosis is the commonest cause of death in Europe and the United States. It is responsible for angina and myocardial infarction, cerebro-vascular disease and peripheral vascular disease and it is thus the cause of considerable morbidity as well as mortality. Until recently symptoms due to an occluded or stenosed artery could only be relieved by surgery to remove or bypass the occlusion.
