Abstract

Pain has afflicted patients and frustrated therapists since time began. Renewed interest and effort in the management of pain in recent decades (1), and an improved understanding of its complex mechanisms and its multidimensional nature (2) have led to an explosion of scientific and therapeutic interest in pain and its treatment. Renewal of interest in RSD being a case in point. However, before discussing management, it is important to briefly review our current understanding of the nature of pain.
