Non-Random Distribution of Alu-Family DNA Repeats in Human Chromosomes

Abstract

Human retrotransposons, the Alu-family DNA repeats (AFRs), are members of an abundant heterogeneous family of short intersperced repeats containing promoter for RNA polymerase III, which is active in vitro (Perez-Stable et al., 1984) but is silent in HeLa cells in vivo (Poulson and Schmid, 1986). We have studied long-range distribution of AFRs in human chromosomes using tritium-labeled (Filatov et al., 1984; Filatov et al., 1987; Filatov et al., 1988) and biotin-labeled Alu-probes and have found that the distribution is non-random: some chromosome bands reproducibly show a more intensive hybridization signal compared to other bands.
