Origin and Ultrastructural Cytochemistry of the Extranucleolar Bodies at the Preovulatory Follicle Stage and during Rat Oocyte Maturation

Abstract

It is now well accepted that ordered changes occur in the fine structural organization of the nucleolus during follicular growth in mammalian species. These morphological changes have been studied by many authors by both light and electron microscopy in mouse oocytes (Chouinard, 1971; 1975), in pig and bovine oocytes (Crozet et al., 1981; 1986) and in human oocytes (Zybina et al., 1984). However, the majority of these authors have been interested in the early stages of oocyte meiosis and further evolution of the nucleolus of the mammalian oocytes has been less thoroughly described. A systematic study of ultrastructural modifications which appear in the rat oocyte nucleolus during follicular growth has therefore been performed (Antoine et al., 1987).
