Epidemiology of Candida Infections in Aids

  • Chapter
Mycoses in AIDS Patients

Abstract

Oral, vaginal and oesophageal candidosis occur commonly in patients with HIV infection. The incidence of oesophageal candidosis varies between subgroups of the HIV-infected population, indicating that factors more complex than the presence or absence of HIV infection determine the pathogenic status of Candida. Almost all Candida infections in AIDS are caused by the species C. albicans. Some surveys, but not all, show an increased prevalence of C. albicans serotype B strains in AIDS patients. The possibility that the immunosuppression and protracted antifungal chemotherapy associated with HIV infection may create a selective pressure for evolution of unusual C. albicans strains is supported by the finding of unusually closely related DNA types among four of nine AIDS patients in one survey.
