Abstract
“When you have my heart in your hand, could you please take the bitterness out of it?” This remarkable request addressed to a cardiac surgeon epitomizes some of the problems facing the heart patient since his view of surgery can be so different from ours. The request was not a metaphor, and when I asked him about it he looked puzzled and asked, “Where else would my bitterness be?!”
