Abstract
Despite numerous approaches for managing patients with ventricular arrhythmias, sudden cardiac death remains one of the leading causes of death in the United States today [1]. The psychological reactions to such episodes, namely, fear, anxiety and depression, as well as personality variables which may have contributed to the etiology or exacerbation of coronary heart disease, have been well documented [1–9]. However, the psychological aspects among cardiac patients whose lives have been prolonged by artificial devices, e.g., the automatic implantable cardioverter defibrillator (AICD) is an area that remains relatively unexplored [10].
