Abstract
Sudden cardiac death accounts for approximately 450,000 of all annual cardiac deaths in the United States alone [1], making it one of the leading causes of death today [2]. Although the pathogenesis of sudden cardiac death remains unclear, it has been accepted that the majority of these out-of-the-hospital deaths are caused by ventricular fibrillation related to a malignant ventricular arrhythmia [1]. One year mortality rates (26%) remain high despite the availability of potent antiarrhythmic agents and arrhythmia surgery [1,3].
