Abstract
A mother and a child who can communicate effectively develop a relationship through which the child can develop in positive ways. The communication begins as the newborn reacts to the new environment, primarily to the caretaker-mother and she in turn responds sensitively to the infant. The quality of her response to the infant’s rhythms, signals, pacing, and preferences can set in motion a chain of mother-child sharing interactions that can contribute greatly to the child’s subsequent development.
