Abstract

The birth of the first baby conceived by in vitro fertilization (IVF) in 1978 was a landmark event in the field of reproductive endocrinology and infertility.1 However, the event itself was the result of at least three decades of intensive scientific investigation. The first attempt at fertilization of the human oocyte was reported by Menkin and Rock in 1948.2 During the next three decades, advances in embryo culture and use of the laparoscope produced the success of 1978.3 Since that time, use of ovulatory-inducing drugs to recruit multiple oocytes has brought the pregnancy rates in most centers up to 15% to 20%, and the use of ultrasound retrieval of oocytes has significantly simplified the procedure. As a result, IVF is now a valuable infertility treatment to be offered to many patients, and its benefits and drawbacks can be weighed against other forms of treatment.
